Hi Patrick,
I would like to move the Search Bar from the top right of the page to (for instance) the top of the widget column?
Would also then like to move the rest of the page up to hug the top.
Is this 'easily' accomplished; or am I asking for trouble down the line?

You'll need to open up functions.php. From there, you can comment out various lines from 26-33 that will alter the site. Adding // before line 28 will remove search from the header. Then you can use the search widget to add it to the sidebar.
As far as moving the design up, you'd need to remove the site title, description, and address as well.
