I am familiar with WordPress, but am not sure why there is such hostility from WordPress users towards flash and vise-versa?
Which is better?
I wouldn't say hostility is the right word. And it certainly depends on the situation...
When talking about using Flash as a part of your website you'll generally get a thumbs-up from everyone. You just need to make sure that its a proper use of Flash. And what is a proper use of Flash? In my opinion, its something that can't be done using HTML or can be done much better using Flash. Usually this pertains to media.
I think the conflict you're talking about comes from those that believe in standards-based web design and accessibility. Flash is a great tool, but myself and many others don't think it usually fits the bill for an entire website. You lose out on critical SEO, browser support, usability, and accessibility.
Also, its not the WordPress community that is against certain uses of Flash, it's just those of us that think web design has to encompass a lot more than just a slick interface.
As for the Flash addicts that oppose "purists", I'm not even sure if they exist anymore. If so, they're hiding in a corner because that's where they belong.
There is a captcha plugin that uses flash.
So there must not be such a battle.
